History of the Dutch Language: Covers the evolution of the Dutch language starting with it's origin around 700 AD, the Gothic phase, Old Dutch (before 1150), Middle Dutch (c. 1150-1500), the 16th and 17th century during which time the 'Holland expansion' occurred, and the 19th and 20th century which saw the existence of many dialects and regional differences. Also includes a discussion of the closely related languages, Frisian, an independent West-Germanic language influenced by Dutch, and Afrikaans, which arose from Dutch in the 17th century and is now an independent language.
